Ecological insights from three decades of animal movement tracking across a changing Arctic

2020

Ecological “big data” Human activities are rapidly altering the natural world. Nowhere is this more evident, perhaps, than in the Arctic, yet this region remains one of the most remote and difficult to study. Researchers have increasingly relied on animal tracking data in these regions to understand individual species' responses, but if we want to understand larger-scale change, we need to integrate our understanding across species. Davidson et al. introduce an open-source data archive that currently hosts more than 15 million location data points across 96 species and use it to show distinct climate change responses across species. Such ecological “big data” can lead to a wider understandi…

A Little Bird Told Me: Discovering KPIs from Twitter Data

2020

The goal of our research and experiments is to find the definitions and values of key performance indicators (KPIs) in unstructured text. The direct access to opinions of customers served as a motivating factor for us to choose Twitter data for our experiments. For our case study, we have chosen the restaurant business domain. As in the other business domains, KPIs often serve as a solution for identification of current problems. Therefore, it is essential to learn which criteria are important to restaurant guests. The mission of our Proof-of-Concept KPI discovery tool presented in this paper is to facilitate the explorative analysis taking Twitter user posts as a data source. After process…

A Semantic Web Approach for Geodata Discovery

2013

International audience; Currently, vast amounts of geospatial information are o ffered through OGC's services. However this information has limited formal semantics. The most common method to search for a dataset consists in matching keywords to metadata elements. By adding semantics to available descriptions we could use modern inference and reasoning mechanisms currently available in the SemanticWeb. In this paper we present a novel architecture currently in development in which we use state of the art triplestores as the backend of a CSW service. In our approach, each metadata record is considered an instance of a given class in a domain ontology. Our architecture also adds a spatial dat…
